The content is interesting and relevant and the reporting is superlative. Equally impressive is the drive to stay relevant by presenting media in multiple formats, from print to podcasts and short videos.” “Impeccable journalism with an app to match. The Economist doesn’t need my endorsement of the quality of their journalism. It speaks for itself. Rather, I’ll comment that their app is well-designed and refreshing to use…I love being able to easily download entire editions, listen to articles with real narrators and search for past articles.” Full terms of use: https://www.economist.com/legal/terms-of-use Our privacy policy: https://www.economist.com/privacy Download The Economist app now for trusted reporting on news developments—from science and tech to business and finance news.

    No Paywalls is false
  • AI narration fails if not connected; useless on airplane

Hiking out of data coverage (or on airplane), app refused to play article even though I had all audio downloaded, because that story was “AI narrated” only. Again! Also, still dislike that sections are so badly ordered (Britain and Europe so far down the order)

  • Addition of CarPlay takes this to the next level

So happy to see CarPlay support added to the app. I love the podcasts, but this will help me get thru more of the articles. Please add playback speed controls. 1x is just too slow for me and there are a lot of articles I’d like to get to each week.

Great app for economist subscribers and now (4/26) even better with CarPlay support added. Easy to listen to subscriber content while driving and to queue up all your favorite podcasts and articles.
  • I miss the old audio narrations

The Economist app lost a lot of character when it switched to AI narrators. I didn’t mind that only select articles were narrated and there was some delay. Intentionally absorbing articles is more difficult now.
  • Needs lots of improvements

Even if I’ve downloaded an issue, the app still needs Internet access. If I download issues and then go on an airplane and reopen the app, it still needs Internet access to show any articles or play any audio — defeating the entire purpose of downloading the issue for offline access. The reason appears to be a combination of bad requirements, coding, and testing. It is a bad requirement to require network connectivity to view an issue or play its audio while offline. Poor coding leads to a terrible outcome since the already downloaded data should be presented to the user even when offline. Lastly, it seems that the testers never tested such use cases while offline (airplanes or elevators/lifts or garages/carparks or anywhere else where network access is not available). I love The Economist’s content. I have also been a user of The Economist app for as long as it has been out, and I continue to be disappointed in its performance.
  • Notifications don’t work

Somewhat useless if you want to use Notification Center to read articles. Clicking on a notification opens the app, but not the article - so you have to search for the article. Infrequently, the articles shows up after a minute or two (navigating to the beginning if you already started reading). Works fine for browsing via the app though.
  • Shouldn’t be this hard

Due to an overly aggressive, downloading of stories and checking credentials, clicking an alert doesn’t bring you to the story, but simply opens the app, unless you’ve recently opened the app already. Before, the app would log out you on an overly agressive basis also rendering the app not particularly good. Plenty of other paywalls news organizations have managed to write cohesive iOS apps. I’m not sure why this has been an impossibility for the Economist for years.
  • When will they fix the audio queue?

Why can’t I play JUST ONE story in the queue without having it add the entire edition??? If you guys won’t add a sleep timer, at least build a working queue. This is why I can’t recommend The Economist to anyone.
